Jessica Rose Epel Alupo: Lady of Great Character

Women have continually proven that they can go beyond people’s expectations and overthrow what the norms dictate. Professions like politics and construction are places where people least expect females to be but as of today, names of women who have excelled in such roles keep rolling out, and Ms Jessica Rose Epel Alupo is ably represented in this group.

Ms Jessica Alupo is the current vice president of Uganda. She is a woman who has seen the sides of politics, education and the military. Previously she served as a member of the Ugandan cabinet where she was the minister of education. Also, she is serving as a member of the parliament, representing the Katakwi District as a representative of women.

Her launching…

Hailing from the Katakwi District of Uganda, Ms Alupo started as a high school canteen attendant. She took the officer cadet course and later went to study political science and linguistics at Makerere University. She further went on to get her Masters of Arts in International relations and diplomacy.

She is also armed with a Diploma in public administration and management coupled with her second masters in public administration and management. Her previous work experience includes teaching at the Katakwi high school, working as an instructor at the Uganda Urban Warfare Training School, and as an intelligence officer at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence.

Her political movement started when she became a candidate for the Katakwi District women’s representative. Later she was minister of youth and children affairs, and then she was minister of education and sports.

Today, she stands as the 2nd Female Vice President to grace the political sphere of Uganda. Her role in the military also left her with the title of Major as she is a retired Major of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF).

A woman of character

Her Excellency Ms Alupo is continually remembered for creating the Students Loan Scheme, Quota system and the Centre of Excellence. She has also pushed the initiative of more public universities in Uganda.

Her influence brought about the beginning of school feeding, and she supervised the writing of the school feeding guidelines and the execution of the guidelines.

Ms Alupo is also an intelligent officer at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) in Kampala, Uganda. She did experience some failures when in the 2016 general elections; she lost the Katakwi Woman Parliamentary seat and was dropped from the cabinet. But she continued to push, and today she has climbed a high point in her political career. In 2021, she won the election and was voted back in as the Woman legislator for Katakwi District though the re-election was difficult as there was violence as many people did not take sides with her.

In whatever position of authority we find ourselves, change must be the topic of discussion and women who are in these positions are role models to upcoming women politicians. For impacting lives, we will forever be remembered by those touched whom we have touched.
